Monofilament Sutures Monofilament suture materials possess greater memory (i.e., suture tendency to retain its shape after it is manufactured) than multifilament suture. Monofilament also has a lower coefficient of friction (i.e., more slippery) than multifilament materials. These characteristics have a direct impact on knot security.
All swaged sutures are packaged to minimise the “memory” of the suture material , making it easier to PGP (PGCL) synthetic absorbable monofilament sutures.
After stretching, the monofilament does not take its original position, it twists and can burst at any time. Polymers from which the monofilament is made have a large margin of tensile strength. After stretching, the monofilament tends to return to its original state. The faster this happens, the better the product.
